A hybrid solar system combines the best of both worlds: the convenience of a grid connected system — including the ability to earn Feed-In Tariff credits — with the extra peace of mind of a battery backup. This means that even during a power blackout, you still have electricity.

An off-grid or standalone photovoltaic system is when your solar photovoltaic system is not connected to the utility grid and you are producing your own electricity via solar, wind, microhydro, generator, etc. These systems will generally have a battery bank in order to store the electricity for use when needed.

What is the difference between string and micro inverters?

Both technologies have their pros and cons. String/Central inverters are used when the array will not experience shading; mainly for trackers. Microinverters allow you much more freedom with your installation. They are mounted under each panel and plug directly into the panel's junction box. Enphase microinverters isolate each panel which reduces the effects of shading, panel mismatch and non favourable orientation. They also feature maximum power point tracking (MPPT) at the module level which increases array production by up to 5%-20%. Pros: the installation is usually cheaper. Micro inverter’s initial cost is 20-40% higher than String inverter, however String inverters usually will need to be replaced within 10-15 years. On the other hand Micro inverters have over 300 years projected mean time between failures (MTBF).Pros: they yield more electricity. They are a better option if your roof is partly shaded by trees, a chimney, or facing different directions or angles. The warranty is usually longer. Cons: higher initial cost.

Micro inverters are a good choice if you need a small residential solar system. Paying the extra initial cost of micro-inverters to avoid evident risks of underperformance caused by shading or technical faults makes sense in dense residential areas where the chance of that happening is high. If your house is built on a hill, is higher than the other buildings in your neighborhood, or you live in an open area, when shading is not usually a problem, you can consider a string inverter as it is both cheaper and effective.

On-Grid system means you don’t have any storage; in other words - grid is your storage. In a net metering arrangement, you will be using power directly from your solar generator in daylight time and any excess will go back to the grid. At night, you will be using power from your grid.

A hybrid system has battery storage. The excess electricity will be stored into your battery instead of going back to the grid. At night, you will be able to use power from your battery rather than getting it from the grid. You will still be connected to the grid in case of any excess load or solar failure.

An off-grid system is independent from the power grid. You must have battery storage which is big enough to power your entire load at night or in bad weather conditions like on rainy or cloudy days. People often have another source of power such as a generator as a backup. Off-grid systems are usually installed in places where there is no grid connection available.

Small Technology Certificate (STC) is a source of rebate, which used to be called Renewable Energy Certificate (REC). After registration, it can be converted into dollars once you sell it.

There are a certain number of STCs that can be registered against every KW system you are installing. There is a virtual market to sell these certificates you are generating from your installation. Once you sell the STC you will get your rebate in a dollar amount.

If the performance of your panel/panels drops down below the manufacturer-specified limit, you can claim your warranty. Most of the panels have a 25-year performance warranty.

Net metering is the arrangement where the production from your Solar generator will be used by your household appliance first, then any excess will either go back to the grid or store into your battery, depending on your set up.

You need your panel/inverter’s brand name, serial number, and CCEW (you can get this from your installation company).

In the case of string inverters, for example, if you have a 5KW inverter and 20 panels (250W), you have to add another inverter which would be either the same or higher rating than the additional panels. For micro inverters, as these are independent with every panel, you can add panels quite easily.

Just like with other products, it is the manufacturer who is responsible for the warranty. It is a good idea to use reputable market leaders to avoid disappointments.

The first sign of the system not working is no display on the inverter, restarting the system usually helps, and if it does not, you need to contact us immediately.

A solar system increases your house value. It is always recommended to add your solar system into your house insurance in case the solar panels get damaged. The panels are protected from hail damage only to a certain extent, so adding them to your insurance will give you a peace of mind.

We are using web applications to check your roof space, which in most cases is pretty accurate. If we can’t access it we will be sending one of our agents to check it on site without any extra charge. In more than 95% of cases we can usually calculate your roof space from our back office.

If you are close to seawater there is a high chance of getting your system affected by salt mist corrosion. We recommend that you use the panels that have a salt mist corrosion protection. Most of the top tier one panels have this protection.

Almost all inverters have an online monitoring system, where you can access your inverter remotely from your smart phone, tablet or PC. If you have an old string inverter you will see there is little display on it, and you can check the statistics from that display by using a button.
